To add data items, you can either enter them manually or import them from a tab separated text file. You can also create documents with the data from both the EU and US examples.
Adding data items manually
| To add items manually:
Click the Add button or select Add Item from the Edit menu. |
In the sheet that appears, you can enter values for Amount, Date and an optional Comment.
Advances or drawdowns should be entered as negative numbers, and payments and costs as positive numbers.
If you want to create a series of data items with regular intervals, change the Frequency from 'once' to the desired frequency and enter the number of Occurrences that you want to add.
You can edit the Change type from 'no change' to 'amount' if you want increasing amounts or to 'percentage' if you want amounts that increase or decrease by a percentage.
The Change by value is the amount or percentage by which the original amount will change.
The Step size is the number of items that are created before the change is applied.
Example: For monthly payments that increase each year by 3 % as in the EU Example 9, you would set Frequency to monthly, Change type to percentage, Change value to 3 and Step size to 12 (every 12 payments).
Please note that these values can only be used when adding a batch of items, once created they can only be edited individually, making it important that you check that what’s added is what you intended to add.
If you made a mistake you can undo the Add Items action and try again.
Importing data from a file
When you need to add items with irregular dates and/or amounts, or when you can generate the data using another application, it is often easier to import them as a tab separated text file.
Most text editors and a spreadsheet aplications can create tab delimited text files, either by saving them directly with the extension '.txt' or by exporting them as TSV files with extension '.tsv'.
| To import items from a file:
Click the Import button or select Import from the File menu. Select Tab Separated Values. |
Input file requirements
- To be valid, the text file used for importing needs at least two tab delimited columns named 'Date' and 'Amount'.
- There can be an optional third column named 'Comment' in which you can enter a short (maximum 20 charachters) description.
- Column headers do not need to be at the top of the file, the software will search for valid headers and, when it finds them will import rows that look like data rows.
- Dates need to be formatted as YYYY-MM-DD.
- Amounts need to be formatted in your current locale with the proper thousands delimiter and decimal point.
- The tab separated text file may have additional columns, they will be ignored when importing.
After importing an import result sheet will be displayed.
- When no errors were detected, the number of imported data items is displayed.
- When data items are formatted correctly, but some fields contain invalid or missing values, the dialog will display error details and display a table for the found items with errors marked in red.
At this point you can cancel the import or save the found data items along with the error info, so that you can correct errors in this file or use it to quickly find errors in the original file.
TIP: You can import data multiple times into the same document.
Importing example data
| To import example data:
Click the Import button or select Import from the File menu. Select either EU Examples or US Examples |
Importing examples is a great way to experiment with the application without having to enter any data, as you can import the examples from the documentation that we used to check our results.
If your document already has data items, APR Calculator wil automatically create a new untitled document, otherwise it will add them to the currrent empty document.
Provided are the EU examples 1 to 29 described in the EU guide and all the US examples described in Appendix J.
Note: You may see minor differences in the calculated APR for some EU Examples, these are most likely due to rounding/not rounding calculated amounts in the spreadsheet that the guide uses.
Feel free to add, edit or delete items, as they can always be imported again.
Tip: If you want to copy the example name to the clipboard before importing the example data, click the Paperclip button next to the Example popup. When the current example name is copied, the button will be highlighted.
In the newly created Untitled document, you can click on the name to edit it and paste the copied name.
